The Real McCoy Beer Co, Ballston Spa

Did you know we had a piece of baseball history here in Ballston Spa? And it serves beer?

The Real McCoy Beer Co. started back in 2015 and they’re a small batch New York State Farm Brewery, meaning that 20% of their ingredients are from right here in New York State (read more).

I knew that they had delicious beer but before I went there in person, I didn’t realize the history. Their Ballston Spa location is located in the historic birthplace of Major General Abner Doubleday. Major General Doubleday was a career United States Army officer and Union major general in the American Civil War. You may know his name more in association with baseball. According to Wikipedia, “In 1908, 15 years after his death, Doubleday was declared by the Mills Commission to have invented the game of baseball (a claim never made by Doubleday during his lifetime). This claim has been thoroughly debunked by baseball historians.”

The Real McCoy Beer Co. offers the same delicious beers but this location offers something more – a Super Nintendo. The space feels very much like an old house and the decorations are pretty dated, aside from the randomly-placed baseball reference. It’s cozy and warm and did I mention they had a Super Nintendo? There’s only one system on a tiny television and extra games behind the bar but I really enjoyed playing while drinking one of their IPAs. This is a good place to casually hang out with friends and chat away from the crazy, loud bar scene. It’s like you’re in your house but you actually got out of the house!
