There’s something about ice cream in this area. The minute these places open, we go crazy! Somehow, this was the first time I’d visited this staple.
Jim’s Tastee Freez started out as Bill’s Tastee-Freez in 1963 and then became Jim’s Tastee-Freez in 1980 “marking the onset of another generation in this local family owned and operated business,” according to their website. James Sheldon, the namesake for Jim’s Tastee Freez, became a very notable man in the area not only because of the delicious ice cream but because of the incredible man he was. Sadly, Sheldon passed away early this year and according to Spotlight, “Sheldon’s legacy will continue to live on through all he helped to bring fun, sweet and happy memories.”
Jim’s Tastee Freez may be serving their delicious food and ice cream without their owner and namesake this season but they’ve already hit the news being the first recipient of the Two Buttons Deep “Big Tip Energy.” They decided to match the donations and donate all the money to a local charity that helps food insecure communities: the Pandemic Produce Pick-up in Albany.
There’s something about Jim’s Tastee Freez that makes them different. Their ice cream is delicious and creamy, their food hits the spot, but it’s the heart of their location that keeps them going, that keeps them loved within the community. I just can’t believe it took so long for me to see it for myself.
