You know you’ve driven by it on your way to a concert at SPAC, but have you ever been inside? If not, you’re missing out on some amazing history and really awesome cars.
The Saratoga Automobile Museum opened in June 2002 inside the Saratoga Spa State Park in the New York State Bottling Plant. I had the chance to walk around and see what cool things were hidden inside such a historic building.
To start, I don’t know much about cars. I know when they’re pretty and I know when they have cool backstories but the ins-and-outs of a car is not in my repertoire. The best part is this museum isn’t just for the super car fiend.
I started out taking a look at the “Wheels: Woman & Independence 1900-1920” exhibit. “At the time, women represented less than 10% of licensed drivers, and “autoing” was definitely not for the faint of heart. Each woman has her own unique story to tell, with a passion for motoring at center.” It was so fascinating seeing all of the stories of women driving in a time where women didn’t have the rights to do much. It’s a fascinating exhibit, especially if you’re a woman, to see just what how our gender had an impact on automobile history.
Then, was the private collection of Rob Dyson. This exhibit is a must-see for any racing fan. It was so cool to see all of the old racing cars and read about where they performed. Rob Dyson is a retired American sports car racing driver and owner of Dyson Racing.
Then, I went upstairs to take a look at more NYS car racing information and some older cars that date back to some important parts of New York State history. I learned so much about these cars from just a bit of time at the museum. There are cars in this museum that I only dream of being able to afford and others that are priceless. If you’re looking to get out of the house and see something new, take a trip to the Saratoga Automobile Museum.
