YMCA Farmers’ Market
July 6 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm
The Farmers’ Market at the East Greenbush Community Library/Greenbush YMCA started during the summer of 2014. Seeking to make the most of its largely rural population and nearby farms, the EG Library partnered with their neighbor, the Greenbush YMCA to bring fresh, healthy, local produce and other goods to the community.
That first foray was such a success that the Market is now in its third season and continues to grow. In the 2015 season, a food truck and community tent featuring local musicians and educational programs were added to the mix. Last year’s programs included the Cornell Cooperative Extension, Voting Registration Information and the Capitol Roots’ Squash Hunger initiative.
Thirteen farms and vendors are scheduled to attend this year. The Market became certified this spring with the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets, allowing the five local farms to accept checks from WIC and the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program. To make the most of this weekly event, the EG Library will be offering outside family story times and summer reading programs on the lawn. “This is a great way to engage our patrons who come to the Market to buy healthy local food, grab a bite to eat and then enjoy the free entertainment,” said JoAnn Jakiela, the EG Library Public Relations/Graphics Coordinator.
