When to Expect Cashless Toll System

You’ve heard the rumors, seen them building the technology on the thruway but when exactly are they going to be put to use?

The New York State Thruway has installed the last in the cashless toll system on the thruway, according to New York Upstate.

The way it works is that instead of going through tollbooths, cameras would capture your vehicle passing underneath the scaffolding. They will be set to read E-ZPass devices as well as those without it. “Vehicles without E-ZPass tags will have their license plate image captured and a toll bill mailed to the registered owner.”

They will be pushing for those without E-ZPass to sign up for it since it can be used in other states and areas and makes the system easier. They’re expecting to have the entire system up and running before the end of 2020. Tollbooths will be removed in phases until the entire system is online. Until then, vehicles will still have to abide by the same tollbooth speed limits.
