I love a good day-trip and I love a mystery so this instantly grabbed my attention. Not too much farther north than Lake George, take a look for yourself!
Kajamuk Cave in Speculator is only about an hour and a half north of Albany and it’s fascinating. If you’re looking into the history of this cave, OnlyInYourState says you’re gonna have a hard time because nobody really knows. Apparently the care is man-made but no one has any real idea who exactly dug it out.
Legends says a famous French Canadian nicknamed French Louie made the cave to protect himself from harsh northern New York winters. There’s a hole at the top of the cave which people feel solidifies the theory that it was man-made. If someone was going to be living there, they would need a place for the smoke to go if they made a fire inside. Now, the cave is used by overnight hikers for protection or just a really cool place to check out if you’re looking for a semi-local hike.
