“So long as you have food in your mouth, you have solved all questions for the time being.”
As wonderful as food trucks are, the problem with them is that they tend to be all over the place so I find myself willingly scouring the Capital Region to find which one is closest to me. My favorite is when they all get together in one place and I can have a bit from each. Last Tuesday was the very first Food Truck Rodeo in Saratoga featuring Kona Ice, Wandering Dago, Eat Good Food, Slidin’ Dirty, Gwenie’s Breakfast Wagon and Fitzy’s Fork in the Road. If you want to see a bit of what each truck serves, check out my last post about the rodeo (HERE).
I first stopped by Wandering Dago for their Garlic Parmesan Tater Tots. They were fantastic! I’ve never seen that on their menu before and I consider garlic its own food group. I could’ve used more garlic on my serving but that usually goes for anything so I don’t hold it against them. One of my favorite appetizers that I’ve had. I’m still waiting on a soy milkshake but I know it will come in due time. Especially since I love in Schenectady and that’s where they frequent. I may bring my own serving of soy milk for the Schenectady Rodeo to be sure!
For my main meal, I went one truck over to Slidin’ Dirty. I can’t keep myself away from their Dirty Ninja (Sautéed Bok Choy and shitake mushrooms, scallion, sesame seed, Asian mustard) and I added a side of Fried Mac & Cheese balls. I’m always curious about fried mac & cheese and though I’m not supposed to eat them, I couldn’t help myself. The best part of fried mac & cheese is that the cheese just seems a little bit gooier on the inside than if you just made it in a pan. You get that added crunch that you would get with homemade mac & cheese that is irreplaceable. Definitely worth a little extra if you were gonna get a side anyway, but their avocado fries still stand as my #1 favorite.
The only thing I was disappointed about was Fitzy’s Fork in the Road. Before I was drawn in by the Dirty Ninja, I was thinking of trying their food out. My cousin decided to get their chicken caesar wrap so that we each got something from a different truck. I understand that food trucks take a little bit more of a wait and I’m fine with it because of the quality that comes out but my cousin ordered from Fitzy’s before I even made it over to Slidin’ Dirty and ordered. I not only got my food but began eating it before she got back to the table. As far as I heard, the food was great but there’s a wait time and then there’s impatience. If they were able to work on keeping up with the demand, I think it would be a lot better.
This rodeo was much better than the Troy Food Truck collection. There were fewer trucks, the wait time was substantially shorter but the food was equally delicious. If you missed this rodeo, no worries there are more to come. The next rodeo will be at the same place, the Saratoga Eagles Club just a short distance from the Saratoga Casino and Raceway, next Tuesday, August 13th from 5:00PM-9:00PM. They JUST announced a Schenectady rodeo at the end of the month on Thursday, August 29th at the corner of Broadway and Liberty with more trucks to choose from! What’s your favorite Capital Region food truck?
