“Writers really live in the mind and in hotels of the soul.”
Edna O’Brien
For my Uncle’s birthday this year, my Mom, Aunt, Uncle and I stayed a few nights at the Six Flags Great Escape Lodge and Indoor Waterpark in Lake George, NY. Even though we only live about an hour away and my Aunt and Uncle live even closer, about 10 mins away, it was a great stay and it made my Uncle happy which made me happy.
The lobby was Adirondack themed with wood panels, couches with Adirondack prints and pictures of bears and etc all around. Since our stay was the end of October, one of the stores was closed, the coffee place in the lobby was closed and the restaurant opened on Friday and our stay was Tuesday-Thursday. We went to our rooms, also Adirondack themed and it was really big.
There were two beds with a couch and table with a dividing wall between the two sections. The beds were some type of memory foam that equaled to me sleeping about 12 hours each night, either because I was so comfortable or exhausted from the work week. I don’t know which it was but I think I can safely assume a lot of it had to do with the bed. My only recommendation is to bring your own pillow, each bed is given two pillows but they’re really puffy, almost to the point where they were really uncomfortable.
The first night, my Mom and I went to the fitness room in the hotel on the third floor. The hotel is only 4 floors high so no matter where you’re staying, you’re close. It had 3 treadmills, 2 recumbent bikes, weights of various sizes, a few mats and a small decline bench but the decline nor height of the bench can’t be adjusted at all. They also have a water cooler and towels for your use as well as a large flat screen TV. Though small, no one else was in there so my mother and I were able to work out in private.
Also available in the hotel was a spa called Serenity at the Lodge. My Aunt, Uncle and I each had massages and my mother got a facial. We got the “Escape” massage which they describe on their website as a “full body massage using long strokes with a combination of kneading techniques. This treatment helps soothe and relax tired muscles and enhances circulation” for 25mins. I added in the moist heat pack treatment, “Excellent therapy for treating muscular tension and spasms. The moist heat dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow to treated areas” since I was having leg trouble. While he was working on my back, the moist heat pack was on my legs and when he began to work on my legs, he moved the moist heat pack to my back. My massage therapist was very knowledgeable in the body. Before the treatment, you must fill out a small questionnaire about body troubles, etc and since I wrote down that my leg was bothering me he gave me some stretches to do to help alleviate the pain.
Next, the most well-known part of the hotel, we went to White Water Bay, the water park. Passes to the park are free with a room at the hotel, or you can purchase tickets online. A half day AM pass & half day PM pass are both $27.00 each, plus tax and a full day pass is $37.00, plus tax. The water park closes from 1PM-2PM each day so the AM, I assume is before that and the PM is for after that. On top of everything is a kid’s park like a mini Splashwater Kingdom, with the bucket to dump water as well but that’s separate from everything else.
Though it’s made for kids, don’t hide the kid in you. There is no age restriction and that’s where you can find the smaller slides to use if the big ones make you nervous. There is also a lazy river where you can grab a tube and just ride the waves, with a few splashes along the way with no limit so if you liked it the first time, just keep riding through. Also under the kid’s playground up top is a jacuzzi which is rather large. There is a section with bubbles and a section without bubbles depending on which you prefer. My favorite part of the water park was the river rapids slide. This ride holds up to 4 people and you walk up a bunch of stairs to the top to get onto this river rapids boat and go down this slide completely in the dark. It lasts about a minute and there’s no splashing or worry that you’re going to fall out of the boat, it’s a lot of fun, even if you don’t normally like those types of slides. For the younger kids is a toddler section with a small swing and small slide and next to that is a surfing and boogie board ride. The water pushes at you and you boogie board or surf in one place, it was pretty cool looking but I didn’t get to try it.
Down by White Water Bay is a small food place where you can buy pizza, hot dogs, nachos, etc that kind of food or you can take a small walk down the hallway to Johnny Rockets which is attached to the hotel. We went to Johnny Rockets for breakfast every morning because it’s cheap, good, and very convenient. Also attached is Johnny Rockets’ sports bar which we didn’t have a chance to take advantage of but it was really nice looking.
Even if you live in driving distance to this hotel, it was fun to take a break for a few days and pretend we were on vacation. Not just for this hotel but if you’re looking to shake things up, stay in a nice hotel by your house. You’ll be able to feel like you’re on vacation without having to spend all that money nor does it involve all the travel stress or heavy packing. I at least recommend the water park. The weather is getting colder and during the week the park isn’t busy at all, we had most of it to ourselves. Though I don’t know what it’s like on the weekend but I can’t imagine it’s as busy as the summer crowd.

Granted, by the time we got ready and left the house it was 11am but since neither one of us had eaten yet, it was still considered breakfast. My Mom decided to go to a diner-like place on Nott Street called Peter Pause.
My mother and I both ordered 2 eggs with hash browns and bread. Sadly, they weren’t able to serve poached eggs after 11am so I just got them however my Mom ordered them (I never remember what the names are for how to cook an egg). The food was very good for the price. This whole plate was around $5 ($6 after 11am). Also, on the side we were served not just regular toast but heavy Italian bread. There was enough there to take home and make a sandwich with later. Make sure, if you’re expecting to take food home, bring containers with you or plan ahead, they charge for take-out containers.

Today with two friends of mine, we experienced the brunch at Sushi Samba. I also attended a SushiSamba meet and tweet a month or so ago. My friends and I ate various delicious sushi rolls along with tweeting about them (we all know how much I love my twitter). We decided that night, after reading the menu, that we need to try brunch and here’s where we found ourselves this afternoon.
There are many options for the brunch menu but we opted for family style. Minimum of 2 people, $15 per person, choice of 4 things from the menu to share. Your choices are:
We decided on the Assorted Pastries and Breakfast cakes, Carmen Miranda, Eggs any Style with chorizo and the Asian Pear Pancakes. Reading what exactly these pastries are now that we were eating, they make sense. We were given the bowl of fruit, no idea what was which and I have to say the guava empanada was by favorite, that and the banana buttermilk were fantastic. With these various pastries we were given three types of condiments to put on them: raspberry jam, maple butter and some sort of tomato based jam like substance that was very sweet and very good.
Next, we received the Carmen Miranda. The seasonal fruit included raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and pineapples, just a medium size bowl of fruit- a dream. Along side was a small dish of yogurt. The yogurt was very good, with pieces of granola and I believe raisin on top. I just wish there was more yogurt for us to share, it was quite a small dish for the amount of fruit we were given.
Third, was the eggs any style platter which alone would have been worth $15. They accommodate each meal to the number of people in your party so we were given three eggs, 8 pieces of chorizo and 3 pieces of bread. Having been in Madrid last Spring, I take advantage of any opportunity to eat chorizo. It was really good. Sometimes I’ve found that restaurants make the chorizo too juicy to the point where it’s a little too oily and I find myself covered in chorizo juice which wasn’t the case here. It was the perfect amount of juicy without the actual juice spilling everywhere. Underneath the bread there was a white substance that we found to be a tad spicy. I still couldn’t tell you what it was but it was tasty as well, especially with the bread dipped in it.
Finally we had the pear pancakes. Besides the obvious fantastic taste, I loved the texture of the pancakes. I was able to cut them with my fork and they were moist but not like they were doused in syrup; they didn’t even need syrup. They gave us whipped cream but along with the fact that I can’t eat it, I don’t think it needed anything to accompany it’s flavor. Again, they knew there was 3 of us so we got 3 pancakes- perfect!
As a beverage, it being brunch, I ordered a mimosa. It was a tad strong but not noticeable in the flavor if you enjoy mimosas as I do. It was a tad pricy ($13) which I didn’t realize until I got the bill but I did enjoy it and think about it all morning. My friend Sibyl ordered hash which was spicy, something I’m not used to. It had pieces of pepper and you could taste the spices but it didn’t leave me running for my glass of water. I really enjoy food that doesn’t involve me to add additional condiments. I feel like condiments in restaurants are just a way of saying that the food doesn’t have enough flavor on it’s own (Hamburgers/Hot Dogs need ketchup/mustard, I get it, I agree). I enjoyed everything we ordered this afternoon and the best part was that after all that food I didn’t find myself so full that I felt like I needed to not eat for the rest of the day. $15 a person, how could you beat that? This is definitely a bunch I’d like to experience again.

I have attended NYU for 4 years and passed by this place on many an occasion but never eaten at Silver Spurs. When you walk passed it on Broadway and 9th Street, you can’t really tell what kind of restaurant it is. Silver Spurs, sounds like the Old West, maybe a BBQ? The inside has cow print, maybe a light-hearted sandwich joint? If you picked either one, you’re right! You can find both BBQ and sandwiches at this diner.

I went with a friend of mine for our lunch break together every Wednesday at 11:00am. This would be breakfast for both of us, so instead of getting burgers we opted for pancakes. As usual with most diners, just our luck, BREAKFAST ALL DAY! The menu is comical, trying to make food lighthearted, diner-like is probably the best way I could say it. My favorite pun was “Cow Juice” instead of milk, though it made me second guess if I wanted it, in case it was something different I’d never heard of, still made me laugh.
We both opted for two pancakes, hers regular mine whole wheat (which I was surprised was an option on the menu). She also ordered home fries on the side and I ordered an Orange Juice (in sizes Alpha and Omega for Small and Large). My pancakes were quite good. They didn’t taste any different because of the “healthier-ness” of it, which I liked. It was the perfect portion size for me on a hungry hump day. The waitress forgot about my OJ at first but brought it over after a few minutes apologizing. The only thing I would say is that the OJ is probably not worth the money. Though good, you get it in a small glass that’s definitely not worth the $2.75 price tag. The home fries were rather delish. We got a whole plate full that was most certainly enough for two people, maybe even three.
Though, I haven’t eaten there for lunch, I heard that the sweet potato fries are heaven-like. I may have to go back on one of these Wednesdays just to try those out! In total, we both spent about $10–which in NYC for lunch time, isn’t bad at all. The restaurant was clean, the food was quick and I would go back for pancakes anytime. How often can you find diners in NYC?
